Romans 16:1-16
Introduction
Names of people have influenced history in a great way. We associate events in history with people. I mean when we say Civil War, we think of people like Abraham Lincoln, General Grant, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis. In fact some of the names of these men conjure up hatred and sometimes there is no reason for the hatred. Many people will automatically associate Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson with the South and they become automatically vilified because they fought on the side of keeping slavery. The problem is that people may not know that much about these men. Like Stonewall Jackson started the first Sunday School for black children in his Prebsyterian Church. He was a devote Christian man. Robert E. Lee, though he did own a plantation, he never once owned a slave. In fact he released the slaves he had inherited from his father-in-law's plantation.
See many people read names and never know that much about the people that they are reading about. That is the problem, we need to know about people in order to gain a better perspective of situations in the past.
We come to the closing of the book of Romans and Paul starts into something familiar with his writing style. He starts his personal greetings. Now when you look at the personal greetings here many of you might think that there is not much to this list of names. I mean the bible is full of names of people. You can get into the OT and the list of kings or in Matthew and Luke and see the names of Jesus' ancestors and it is really not that fun to read their names.
The thing is, that when we look at these names there are some great things to be learned from people that do not get that much press in the bible. Some of these people we know little to nothing about, except what Paul gives us here and in some cases the only thing we do have is the name of the person, which may give us insight int ...
