Introduction

We have become a cynical society. We are society that seeks our own pleasures and desires. We are a society that praises the wrong things and denounces the good things. Just look at this week’s issue of US News and world report.

Teddy Roosevelt once commented, "The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get-rich theory of life."

I. Personal Duties (v. 9)

Paul starts out by listing things in the area of personal duties that we are to follow as Christians that will help us live supernaturally.

A. Love without hypocrisy

The NIV translates this passage with the word "sincere." The NKJV and NAS say, "without hypocrisy." Both are correct in their translations. Sincere love is love without hypocrisy. The word love here is the word, "agape." In the times that Paul is writing the word was considered to be practiced by those who were weak. A true person never practiced "agape" love. "Agape" love centers on the needs of person that is loved and will do anything to show love to that person.

"Agape" love is an essential nature of whom God is and how we as His children are to live. I John 4:16 says, "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him" (NIV).

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he replied, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'" (Matt 22:37-39 NIV).

Paul writes later in Romans, "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law" (Rom 13:8 NIV).
