Title: Casting a Long Shadow
Author: James Merritt
Text: Galatians 6:14
Introduction
1. The date was July 16, 1945. The place was Alamogordo, New Mexico. Something happened on that day that affects us to this day and most probably will affect the human race as long as this world exists. From that day until now the entire world lives under a nuclear shadow. It was on that day that the first atomic bomb was exploded. That one bomb, affects our foreign policy, affects our government spending, and affects the United States military unlike any other event or force in history. No matter where you go you cannot get out from under that shadow.
2. There is another shadow that this world lives under though it doesn't realize it. It is a shadow that every follower of Jesus Christ should willingly and joyfully live under. It is The Shadow of the Cross. From the time that Jesus Christ was born he lived in that shadow. The cross was never absent from his mind, never far from his soul, and never out of his heart. He spent three years with twelve men called "disciples." The first time it is ever recorded that he sat down to teach them anything, what did he talk about? Mark 8:31 tells us -
"He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again." (Mark 8:31, NIV)
3. Every morning when Jesus woke up he lived in the shadow of the cross. Every night when he would lay down to sleep he would sleep under the shadow of the cross. Everywhere Jesus walked he walked under the shadow of the cross. Now ever since his resurrection we live in the shadow of the cross.
4. Every religion and ideology has a visual symbol which illustrates the significant feature of the history of its beliefs. Buddhism is symbolized by the lotus flower because its wheel shape depicts the cycle of birth and death and reincarnation.
