Title: A Tale of Two Sabbaths (10)
Series: Acts
Author: Collin Wimberly
Text: Acts 13:13-52
CIT - Paul and his companions have many Gentiles accept the Gospel at Pisidian Antioch as they preach the Gospel during Sabbath services.
Proposition - The Church today should experience the power of the Gospel at work through the week-by-week proclamation of God's Word.
Question: What must happen for New Life Church to experience the power of God at work each week?
INTRODUCTION:
Context: Luke's note that they went from Perga to Pisidian Antioch is extremely terse, and one is apt to miss the difficulty of the trek. Antioch lay some 100 miles to the north across the Taurus mountain range. The route was barren, often flooded by swollen mountain streams, and notorious for its bandits, which even the Romans had difficulty bringing under control. Antioch itself was in the highlands, some 3,600 feet above sea level. It was one of the sixteen cities named Antioch that had been established around 300 b.c. by Seleucus Nikator in honor of his father Antiochus.1
On the Sabbath - Sunday, as was their habit, they went to the local synagogue for worship.
Each service had a time of reading from the law and the prophets. What we know as the OT. The ruling elder of the synagogue could ask someone to preach or speak on the text of the day. They would most likely have known of Paul. He was well versed in the OT and knew most, if not all of it, from memory. He would have been considered an ideal guest preacher. Perhaps they had also heard of this Christian church that Paul was supposedly a part of. Perhaps they wanted to hear what this man had to say.
We have in these verses a model for us here at New Life. One that has been effective for over 2,000 years. If we wish to experience the power of God at work in our church, there must be an anointed explanation of the Gospel, followed by a call to decision about the Gospel.
