First sentence of the book experience, this book
I) BE DEVOTED TO CHRIST - VS. 1-2
A) THEY WERE SPIRITUALLY GIFTED.
There were Prophets - We tend to think or someone foretelling the future. This occasionally happened. Mostly, prophets were Men and Women who hear from God and speak what they heard to the church. What they spoke did was not authoritative as Scripture. The prophets were to be examined and held accountable to each other. But they encouraged the Church, challenged the church, and even warned the church at times. God revealed specific words for specific times through these people. The prophets received a revelation or a word of knowledge from God. Then spoke it.
There were teachers - Teachers taught the Word of God and the apostles doctrine. The difference between teachers and prophets was that teachers taught the Scriptures. The Scriptures were the authority of the early church.
These gifted people challenged the church to be committed to Christ above all else.
B) THEY WERE A INTEGREATED CHURCH - Their devotion to Christ tore down all the walls of separation in society. More than simply racial, this sociological and economic.
Barnabas - a Levite - a Jewish priest. Already mentioned as a man devoted to Christ and the Gospel.
Simon - called Niger, meaning black. This most likely referred to his skin color.
Lucius of Cyrene - a roman name. Probably brought up in the Roman culture.
Manaeon - A Greek form of a Hebrew name. A Hellensitic Jew. He was raised with Herod. He was a prince, a wealthy and influential person.
Saul - A former Pharisee and persecutor of the Church, now a preacher of the Gospel.
