And he can do what no other God can do.

God is the God of the Impossible.

I) Tell the Story: What happened?

The Context: King Herod is Agrippa I, brother in law of Herod Antipas of the Gospels. He became King under the rule of Gaius Caligula, Emperor of Rome. He was immensely well liked by the Jews. He was pro-pharisee and frequented the temple.

In order to appease the Jews, he had James, the brother of John executed. Being the politician that he was, he saw an opportunity to please the public, so during the feast of unleavened bread, while people were out and about, he Peter arrested.

Peter was the most well-known of the Apostles, and his death would be a blow to the young church.

Herod would not chance offending the Jewish leadership by trying and executing Peter on the Passover, so he put him in jail, intending on bringing him out to the people the next day.

Imprisoned: Peter was most likely imprisoned in the Fortress of Antonia, at the northwest corner of the temple in Jerusalem. An entire Cohort or soldiers was stationed there. 480 soldiers all together. This was not the first time that Peter was incarcerated. In fact, he was a multiple offender. He had been imprisoned before for preaching the Gospel and had been miraculously set free. Herod was taking no chances. He assigned a personal guard for Peter. 4 squads of soldiers, 16 men. They would alternate guard duty every 4 hours, to make sure this prisoner did not get out.
