CIT - Luke describes the character and growth of the church at Antioch where believers were first called Christians.

Proposition - New Life Church must have the characteristics of the church at Antioch to reach a lost world for Christ.

Question: What makes a person or a church worthy of the name Christian?

INTRODUCTION:

We live in a day and age when the name Christian does not seem to mean much.

For some it is little more than a box to check on Facebook.

Some will say, well, I am a Christian, I was raised in a Christian family.

Being a Christian can even be a political tag in our day. Anyone who believes in a morality and conservative values, might view themselves as Christians.

Then, there are the huge numbers of people who believe that Church membership is the same as being a Christian.

The believers were first called Christians at Antioch

Antioch was located on the Orontes River, about 300 miles north of Jerusalem and 20 miles east of the Mediterranean. It was the third largest city in the world

1) A Political Center - A cosmopolitan city. There were five distinct cultures, Greek, Roman, Semitic, Arab, and Persian.

2) A Commercial City - Chiefly a business city, it was sophisticated and tolerant.

3) A Immoral city - Antioch as the Las Vegas of the Roman Empire. It was known for its Chariot racing and deliberate pursuit of pleasure.

Yet in the midst of all this Antioch was one of the greatest churches in the first century.

1) The first world missions effort grew out this church.

2) It was here that many of the greatest preachers of the first century gathered. Men like Paul, Barnabas, and Peter. Even in the second and third centuries men such as Ignatius and Chrysostom preached here.
