Title: God is Full of Surprises! (6)
Series: Acts
Author: Collin Wimberly
Text: Acts 10:1-11:1
CIT - God uses Peter to take the Gospel to the Gentiles when Cornelius and his family are saved.
Proposition - The church today must be ready to go in whatever direction God leads.
INTRODUCTION:
Pastor Thomas Brewer in Tabletalk Magazine, states. "The God of the Bible is in the business of surprising His people with His plan, His care, and His future for them.
In other words, God is just full of surprises.
For example, Abraham, God showed up in his life and out of nowhere called him to leave his home, his friends, his family and head off to a land called Canaan. A place Abraham had never been and did not even know how to get to. That must have bee quite a surprise.
David - A young boy, around 16, the youngest of his father Jessie's sons, was out in the field watching his father's flocks, when one of his brothers runs out to him and says the prophet Samuel is back at the house and wants to see him. He goes, and surprise, the prophet anoints him to be the King of Israel.
The biggest surprise of all was a baby born in a manager in Bethlehem. A baby who was God in the flesh. A baby who would save the world from their sins. Surprise!
ILLUS: Wendell Berry Character Reflects on God's Providence
In Wendell Berry's book, Jayber Crow, Crow, the main character in Wendell Berry's novel, reflects on how God's guidance and providence often catch us by surprise.
"I can't look back from where I am now and feel that I have been very much in charge of my life .... I have made plans enough, but I see now that I have never lived by plan .... Nearly everything that has happened to me has happened by surprise. All the important things have happened by surprise. And whatever has been happening usually has happened before I had time to expect it ...."
God is full of surprises, in our lives and in the life and ministry of the Church.
