Title: Power Church (3)
Series: Acts
Author: Collin Wimberly
Text: Acts 8
CIT: Simon Magus experiences the power of the Spirit at work, but misunderstands its purpose.
Proposition: Christians today need to understand the power and the purpose of the Spirit at work in the Church.
INTRODUCTION:
Context: Vs. 1-2
Persecution breaks out in Jerusalem against the Christians.
Saul, we know him as Paul, was the leader. The Bible says that he was ravaging the Church. The word literally means to break something. He was going to their homes, dragging them out, and throwing them in prison.
Vs. 4 Those who were scattered - The persecution caused people to flee Jerusalem and scatter all over Judea and Samaria.
Do you remember what Jesus commanded the early church in 1:8? He told them they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost ends of the earth.
Now Satan intended this persecution to stymie and defeat the early church. It has just the opposite effect. They were scattering out and sharing their faith wherever they went.
That's a good principle to remember. When something unforeseen, difficult even catastrophic happens, look for what God is up to. There are no accidents in life. God is always at work.
Now in Vs. 5 we meet Philip. He was one of the men chosen in Acts 6 to care for the widows.
He begins to preach. There is great power in the Holy Spirit in his preaching.
In fact, this chapter is about the power of the Spirit and how one man completely misunderstood the purpose of the Spirit's power.
A lot of churches, pastors, preachers, and church members do the same. They realize their need for the Spirit's working, but misunderstand the purpose of the Spirit's power.
I) WE SEE A DEMONSTRATION OF THE SPIRITUAL POWER - VS. 6-13
