Introduction
1. In 2016, the Oxford English Dictionary declared that the word of the year was
post-truth. What does the word mean? The dictionary defined it as, "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief."1 Increasingly, nobody can deny we are living in a society where feelings increasingly trump facts.
2. Today, we are going to be dealing with a topic that is emotionally super-charged. In fact, this topic should probably come with a sign like this, [Jody-show sign below]
It is such a hot topic that there are many pastors today who are adamant in saying they will never address it from the pulpit. The topic is too hot and the elephant in the room for them is too big.
3. We are in a series we have been calling "Facing the Truth." We have been looking at issues that within the church and in the culture are real and though more and more universally accepted outside the church, should not be accepted inside the church. We have dealt with fornication. We have dealt with marriage generally and gay marriage particularly. Today, we are going to deal with an issue that has caused an on-going battle in this nation for half a century. We are talking about abortion. If I may, let me put it in perspective. I want you to understand why this is one gigantic issue.
4. In a Christian Post news report, abortion is now the world's leading cause of death. It accounts for nearly 42 percent of all deaths worldwide. Now think about that for a moment. That is more than cancer, more than heart disease, more than diabetes and in fact the world was shut down over the spread of a virus called Covid-19 and with that only 1.9 million people have died from it.
