Introduction
1. Some of you have experienced the following. A couple has a party at their home and they invite you over. They come up with a clever way to reveal not just that they are having a baby, but whether the baby is a boy or a girl. There are clever of ways that they do the reveal, but the point is you'll eventually see a color - either blue meaning it is a boy or pink meaning it is a girl. They are called "gender reveal parties" and they reflect the view for time immemorial has been accepted up until recently and that is that gender and sex are connected.
2. Furthermore, the reason you can have a gender reveal party is because with ultrasound imaging the sex of a baby is not assigned at birth; it is a bodily fact that can be recognized. It is defined by its organization for sexual reproduction.1
3. Spoiler alert for the message you are about to hear! These parties are now being greatly criticized. We are now being told that there is a difference between sex and gender. They were once synonymous. We are now told that gender is a social construct that has nothing to do with biology or biological characteristics and that our gender identity cannot be determined medically. In other words, even though you see sexual reproductive organs it is not the gender that is being revealed; it is the sex.2
4. In fact, Dr. Deanna Adkins, a professor at Duke University School of Medicine and The Director of the Duke's Center for Child of Adolescent Gender Care made an unbelievable claim.
"It is counter to medical science to use chromosomes, hormones, internal reproductive organs, external genitalia, or secondary sex characteristics to override gender identity for purposes of classifying someone as male or female."3
