Introduction
1. There are some things you can't make up and I am not making this up. Believe it or not, as I was putting on the finishing touches to this message the United States Senate took a vote preparing the way to pass The Respect for Marriage Act. It codifies same sex marriage into law. The law and I quote, "Would prohibit the recognition of marriage between two people on the basis of their sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin." This law would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and require federal and state recognition of same-sex marriages.
2. Now, two immediate observations. They did go ahead and add "this would not require or authorize federal recognitions of polygamous marriages." Now, I don't have time to address that except to say there is no logic or rhyme or reason why if you are not going to limit marriage to gender, why should you limit marriage in number? This is not just what I am saying, but that is what even the last columnist Charles Krauthammer and Dr. Robert P. George a former professor at Princeton University said as well.
3. That aside, that would equate opposition to same-sex marriage to racism, because I am not against and nor should anyone be against any type of interracial marriage. No one should be opposed to anyone marrying because of their race, ethnicity, or national origin, but sex is an entirely different matter as you are going to see.
4. We are in a series that we are calling, "Facing The Truth," with admittedly some of the most controversial and most contentious topics that the church is facing today. Frankly, they are issues that more and more pastors are simply unwilling to touch but I believe what Jesus said about truth. He said, "If you will know the truth the truth will set you free."
