Text: I Thessalonians 4:3-8
Introduction
1. We are beginning a four week series of messages today that I am calling "Facing the Truth" that though I would prefer not to do, I feel like I need to do not so much because of what the culture is in our country, but where the church is and where the church may be headed in our country. I want to say up front that I hope everyone that listens to me over the next four weeks would at least hopefully agree that our overarching concern and desire is truth. It is said,
"If you know the truth, the truth will set you free." (John 8:32, NIV)
If that is true then - 1) It is important that we know the truth; 2) If we don't know the truth or reject the truth, then we will live in slavery to lies and errors.
2. Many years ago newspapers reported this prayer by the chaplain of the Kansas Senate and it is a prayer we need to pray right now.
Omniscient Father:
Help us to know who is telling the truth. One side tells us one thing and the other just the opposite.
If neither side is telling the truth, we would like to know that, too.
If each side is telling half the truth, give us the wisdom to put the right halves together.
In Jesus name.
Amen.1
3. My prayer is over the next four weeks as we deal with the hottest button issues in both the culture and the church today that I will indeed speak the truth in love. But, I am going to honest. Facing the truth is not always popular. It is sometimes painful and frankly to some it is even considered poisonous mainly by those who buy into the culture of political correctness.
4. One of my favorite authors is
Mark Batterson and he said something that was so profound and so good I want to quote it in its entirety.
"...when political correctness becomes the Golden Rule, speaking truth becomes bigotry. Truth is crucified in the name of tolerance, undermining civ ...
