INTRODUCTION: One of the elements of living a W.H.O.L.E. life is to understand leadership. The great military leader Bernard Montgomery said, "Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and the character which inspires confidence."1 Having spent 20 years in the Marine Corps, I can tell you that leadership is crucial to being a successful Marine because success is not given to you, it is earned. Believers in Jesus Christ are called not only to be followers of Jesus, but leaders in Christianity. It's our responsibility to lead people to Christ; it's our responsibility to guide people along their Christian journey; it's our responsibility to provide Godly counsel and insight into how the Lord wants all of us to live. Let me help somebody here...leadership is not about you; leadership is about everybody else! When things go well, the leader is given the credit, but when things go wrong, the leader is blamed. The W.H.O.L.E. Christian understands that within them, there is a leader!
I mentioned earlier about the fact that leadership is crucial to being a successful Marine, but how does one measure success in life? In most cases today, success is viewed has having the big house, the nice car, money in the bank and investments, having a six-figure job, and a family whereby everybody in the family is prospering in their respective areas/lives. As a society, we have put far too much emphasis into the material side of perceived success instead of recognizing that, although things were working well, and in a lot of cases, people with all of these material things tend to be miserable on the inside because they are not completely fulfilled. Sometimes the mindset is "as much as I have, I still need more" and that emptiness is what leads to frustrations, disappointments, and a deep-seated longing ...
