Most of the confusion surrounding the Christian life and how to interpret scripture is caused by not understanding the difference between the old and new covenants. It's vital that the two not be mixed.
When the Bible writes to one of the seven churches in Revelation chapter 3, a warning is given about being lukewarm. The traditional church teaching is that God hates a Christian who is not on fire for Christ, and will reject them by spewing that person out of His mouth. The belief is that hot is tolerable, cold is tolerable, but lukewarm is revolting.1
The truth is that God does not reject us because we can't stay 'fired up'. The easiest way to spot incorrect teaching is this: does it call us to put our trust in Christ's finished work? Or does it depend upon what we do for God? Truth calls us to trust in Christ and learn to walk in the power of the Spirit. Man-focused religion teaches that we must do something right in order to gain God's approval or acceptance.
We are called to learn how to walk in faith, putting all our confidence in Christ and His completed work.
What God warned about was not lukewarm religious activities. It was a warning about mixing the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. The Old Covenant was written on cold stone tablets, and according to the Bible, this covenant administered death.2 A dead person is cold and founded upon the cold, uncaring stone tablets of the law. The law is cold. It doesn't show compassion. It only askes if you are perfect or guilty.
The New Covenant was founded upon Christ, who showed care and compassion for sinners. His work took the judgment of the law upon Himself, and then we are given life because we are in Him. It is for this reason that we are baptized into Christ's death to escape sin, and then baptized with the Spi ...
