Weddings are special days. It is the day that a man and a woman declare their unwavering lifelong commitment to each other. It is the day that a man and a woman publicly express their undying love for one another. In sickness and in health. Till death do us part.

For one couple the love and commitment weren't exactly lifelong. They didn't even make it to the honeymoon! They didn't even make it to the car! As they were walking to the limousine waiting to take them to their honeymoon destination and the beginning of wedded bliss the bride, broke free from her new husband and sprinted across the street and got into a car with another man and left.

The man in the car was an old boyfriend who had boasted that "he could get this young woman anytime he wanted." Apparently, he was right. I can picture him sitting across the street waiting for this young lady to emerge from the church, new ring on her hand, with her newly minted husband, revving the engine, beeping the horn, or rolling down the window and letting out a whistle and watch with joy as she came running.

That, in a way, is an odd and twisted picture of our relationship, as believers, to Christ, and the world. We have been joined with Christ. We have been wed to Christ. He has chosen us and as a result, we have chosen Him but for us, the pull and influence of the world, our old life, our former lover, is still present.
It is strong. It revs its engine. It beeps its horn. It rolls down its window and whistles.
It expects us to break free from the one we have pledged our life to and return to the life, loves and perspectives we once held.

I think we should be honest with ourselves and recognize that we are far too easily seduced and swayed by the whistle of the old life. Through the centuries it seems that Christians and the church, for whom Christ died, has be ...
