Cremona Italy is home to the workshops of the world's finest instrument makers. It was home to the great Antonio Stradivari, who produced some of the finest violins and cellos ever made. Musicians, luthiers (craftsmen who build and/or repair stringed instruments with a neck and sound box), and scientist have tried for decades to discover why a Stradivarius instrument makes such a beautiful sound, because no one has been able to replicate it.

Stradivari did not pass on his secrets. He did not keep notes or journals. The secret to his craftsmanship died with him and his sons. (There is an illustration for the church in that, but it will be for another day).

Though many of the roughly 1,100 of these handcrafted stringed masterpieces constructed by Stradivari and his sons have endured for some 300 years, they, like us and everything else in this world are mortal. Almost half of them have been lost to accidents, careless and unskilled repairman/craftsmen or just the toll that the passing of time takes on every created thing.

Of the 650 that have survived some are too fragile to play. Their wood has grown too thin. Their joints have weakened. They cannot bear the tension and pressure applied when being played. Even those that see regular use change over time as do their tones.

Back around 2019, after three years of preparation, a group of musicians and scientists decided to preserve the unique and beautiful sound of these instruments for generations to come. They wanted to record the sounds of the Stradivari instruments digitally so that composers and artists could continue to make music with them long after the instruments are no longer in use.
