Most men in the 1800's didn't keep a diary or a journal, but apparently my Great-Great Grandfather was one who did. This week, I had the opportunity to read his handwritten notes as he documented his personal journey at the end of the 19th century, and it was fascinating to me.

Feb. 17, 1897 Made a coffin for Mr. Cooper

April 21, 1897 made a coffin for C. Travis

Jan. 12, 1898 pulled teeth for Mrs. Sandford

April 29,1899 bored water and found good water

April 30, 1899 cut a road to the water

As you read through someone's journal you get an idea of their struggles and their successes. Well, that's what Ecclesiastes is; it's a journal of a man's journey. That man just happened to be the King of Israel at the time... his name was Solomon.

Solomon was the son of David and the third King of Israel. Like his father, Solomon reigned for 40 years (most likely between the years 970 and 931 BC) ...and like many people alive today, Solomon's story was lived... as a quest for life's best. He pursued everything under the sun... that he believed... would bring satisfaction to his life.

He pursued relationships-and at one point, he believed, "Relationships will satisfy me." So, what did he do? He married 700 women. Many of us know that Solomon was the wisest man to ever live... and yet you've got to wonder what he was thinking when he decided that having 700 wives was a good idea. Do you understand what 700 wives means? It means that Solomon had 700 mother in laws! Let that sink in for a second. That doesn't sound very wise to me. But in his quest for life's best... he pursued relationships...
