Primary Scripture: Genesis 20:1-17

If you have your Bible, please turn to Genesis chapter 20. I've entitled this message, "From Faith to Sight."

Now, the Bible tells us in Hebrews 11, "Without faith it's impossible to please God, for the one who comes to God must believe that He is, and He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." And the Bible says in Hebrews 11, it gives us the definition of faith. People say, "Well, what exactly is faith?" "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." The Christian life is a walk of faith. And the Bible says, "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him." You receive Christ (Colossians 2:6). You receive Him by grace through faith. And how to do you walk in the Christian life? By grace through faith. It's grace and faith the whole way of the Christian life. Second Corinthians 5:7, the apostle Paul said, "For we walk by faith, not sight." Now, if you think about it, sight is the enemy of faith. When we start walking by sight, we're not walking by faith, because faith is the assurance of things hoped for, for the conviction of things not seen. It's not faith if you see it. So, faith is believing what God says. And what God says is something you can't yet see. And so, when you start walking by sight instead of faith, it gets you into big-time trouble.

We know that when Peter walked on the water, he was doing great until, "...seeing the wind, he became afraid, and he began to sink. And he cried out and said, 'Lord, save me.'" If he wasn't focused on the wind and the waves, he was doing great. His eyes were fixed on Jesus. But that's what happens when we quit walking by faith, and we start walking by sight. Now, that's a problem for you. That's a problem for me. That was a problem for the apostle Paul who wrote Second Corinthians 5, verse 7. It was a problem for Abraham.
