Many of us saw when Mount St. Helens erupted and the power that would come from that and the destruction that came from that. It just chills you to the bone to think about that; to think that somebody was consumed in that. Well, when we read in Scripture about Sodom and Gomorrah and two other cities that don't get a lot of attention, Admah and Zeboiim (they were the cities of the plain), they were consumed like that, but not to a volcanic eruption, but through fire and brimstone that came down from heaven.

Now, as we've been going through the Book of Genesis, and you do a timeline on the Book of Genesis, you'll find that the flood came 1,656 years into man being on the earth. That's all it took for God to say, "I'm sorry that I made man on the earth. I'll destroy the earth with a flood." And He brought Noah and his wife and his three sons, Ham, Shem, and Japheth, and their wives, eight people were spared. And then you go another 450 years after that to the year 2105, and Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim are completely wiped off the map. Judgment is revealed very early on in the Book of Genesis. And there's much that we can learn about the character and nature of God as we see what triggers His cataclysmic wrath.

So, Genesis 18. It starts out, the first half of the chapter is about the coming of a son; the son of miracle birth, the son of promise, Isaac, whose name means "laughter." And God came to Abraham. The Lord Jesus in His pre-incarnate appearance came to Abraham with two angels to tell him, "About this time next year I will visit you, and your wife will have a son." Well, that's great news. But then the scene shifts in Genesis 18, and it says beginning in verse 16, "Then the men (the two angels that were with the LORD), the men rose up from there, and looked down toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them ...
