Series: From Here To Eternity
Author: James Merritt
Text: Matthew 5:22, 28-30
Introduction
1. "Don't go there." It will stop a conversation dead in its tracks. There have been times in our marriage when Teresa and I have got into (shall we just say) a very intense discussion. I have learned one thing that has really helped me to communicate in our marriage. When she says with a stern look on her face, very calmly, "Don't go there." Do you know what I do? I don't go there!

There are some subjects you had rather avoid. There are some topics you had rather leave in the closet. I admit today is by far the single biggest subject in the Bible I rather not talk about. One word -"hell."
3. I absolutely agree with one of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis who said,
"There is no doctrine which I would more willingly remove from Christianity than [hell]. If it lay in my power...I would pay any price to say truthfully: All will be saved."1
4. I am telling you I didn't look forward to preparing this message nor to preaching it. Yet on the other hand, maybe I shouldn't be so hesitant, because even today 62% of Americans believe in hell.2 Fifty-four percent of Americans believe they will get to heaven after they die and only two percent believe they are going to hell.3
5. Another thing to consider is it seems like everybody talks about hell all the time. You would be amazed how many times that word is used every day in some way or the other. These are words in our vocabulary.
We will describe a crazy driver as "hell on wheels."
