Introduction
1. From the founding of this nation, we have been known throughout the entire world for one single document, the Constitution, which is the landmark legal document of the Western world and the oldest written national constitution in existence. The first ten Amendments of the Constitution is known as the Bill of Rights which guarantees the basic freedoms we enjoy in this country. One of the basic rights we have is found in the Sixth Amendment which reads as follows:
"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."
2. So the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to a criminal defendant, to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and the evidence against you.1 Simply put, the Constitution guarantees all of us that you get to have your day in court.
3. You may not realize it, but from the time the first human being entered into this world, every person who has ever lived has been guaranteed by the Supreme Judge of this universe that you have a date with the Supreme Court of the universe and you will have your day in court. Everyone is going to face judgment day.
