The Fall of Man (7 of 61)
In the Beginning
Pastor Jeff Schreve
Primary Scripture: Genesis 3:1-8
If you have your Bible, please turn to Genesis chapter 3. Genesis chapter 3 is one of the most important chapters in the whole Bible. Genesis 3 explains what happened in the Garden of Eden, what happened to Adam and Eve, and what happened to man as a result of their fall. People have maligned Genesis chapter 3. No doubt, the devil himself works to get people to malign Genesis chapter 3, telling society, "Well, that's just a story. That's just a fairytale. That's just a fable. I mean, do you Christians really believe in talking snakes," and it gets Christians to kind of back up, "Well, maybe God is just telling a story." He's not telling a story. This is exactly what happened in the Garden of Eden. You weren't there. I wasn't there. Adam was there. Eve was there. God was there. And God says this is what has happened, what did happen, and this is what sunk the ship of the human race right here in Genesis chapter 3.
When Adam and Eve sinned against God, the Bible says then we were plunged as a human race into sin (Romans chapter 5, verse 12). Adam sinned, and that sin brought death into the world. Now everyone has sinned, and so everyone must die. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." "And the wages of sin is death." So, what really happened on that day? We don't know how long a gap there is between Genesis 2:25 and Genesis 3. I mean, obviously, in our Bible it's the very next verse is Genesis chapter 3, verse 1. But it doesn't tell you how much time has elapsed there. It's before Adam and Eve had any children, before Eve had conceived. Somewhere in there you have an encounter in the Garden of Eden. This is what the Bible says: "Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, 'Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden? ...
