Primary Scripture: Genesis 5:1-32
You know, some people like to go to garage sales. And, you know, one person's junk is another person's treasure. I was reading today about people that got some deals at a garage sale. One person went to a garage sale and found an antique bowl - it was just an old pottery bowl. They didn't know it was antique, but they bought it. I think they paid something like 3 bucks for the bowl. And then it just sat on their shelf for a while. And somebody said, "You know, that looks pretty old. You might want to have that checked into." And so, they took it to some kind of place that looks at that stuff, and they determined that was a bowl from the northern Sung dynasty in China, and it sold to a London art dealer for 2.25 million dollars. Pretty good investment. Now, everybody likes to go to garage sales. I was reading about a lady that sold a denim jacket at a garage sale. She was going through her closet, sold this denim jacket, put it in the garage sale. Somebody paid twenty bucks for this denim jacket. A couple weeks later, the lady that had the garage sale, it dawned on her, I keep my jewelry and my cash in the pocket of that denim jacket. She had $18,000 worth of jewelry and $1500 cash. It didn't get returned. Somebody had bought a piece of jewelry. It was just costume jewelry, or so they thought. Big diamond in it. Bought this thing, put it in their costume jewelry drawer. Bought it for 10 bucks or whatever it was. It turns out that was a 26-carot diamond. It was worth $850,000. You know, sometimes the things we think are not very expensive and nice and costly end up being very expensive and very nice and very costly. So it is with Genesis chapter 5.
Now, Genesis chapter 5 is the genealogy of Adam and his descendants, the godly line of Seth. You know, when people start reading the Bible, they say, "Well, I'm going to read the Bible. ...
