If you have your Bible, please turn to Genesis chapter 1, verse 1. If you have trouble finding Genesis 1:1, you're in trouble.

The old hymn says this: "How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word. What more can He say than to you He has said; to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?" Our faith is built on the solid foundation of the Word of God and the God of the Word. As we read the Word of God, as we heed the Word of God, as we believe it, as we put it into practice in our lives, lo and behold, God begins to work, and our lives begin to change, and situations begin to change, and our attitudes begin to change. That's how God works.

Now, as we begin a new series on the Book of Genesis, Genesis is one of the most important books in all the world. It's one of the most important books in the Bible. And as we begin this series, we have an opportunity to learn how God sets things up. And we have an opportunity to make sure our lives are on the sure foundation, the firm foundation, of the Word of God.

Genesis 1:1 is such foundational truth. If you miss Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," if you get off on that, it's like buttoning your shirt and you miss the first button. You get it off on the wrong hole, and the whole rest of the shirt is off if you miss the first button. Well, the first button of the Bible, of the shirt called the Bible, of the shirt called life is, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Now, that is foundational truth. It's only seven words in Hebrew. It's ten words in English. That creates the foundation for you, for me, for us to build our lives on the truths found in Genesis 1:1.
