Title: The Mercy of God (3 of 6)
Series: The Attributes of God
Author: David Davis
Text: 2 Chronicles 30:9
II Chronicles 30:9 - "For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him."
Lamentations 3:22-23 - "It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. (23) They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."
I Peter 1:3 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
Jude 1:21 - "Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life."
There are two general terms regarding the Attributes of God.
1. Absolute -- Whether He ever created anything, whether He ever made human beings, and had any dealings with them -- they would still be His attributes.
2. Relative - Only as He is able to relate to someone, is He able to express that attribute.
The Love of God is an absolute attribute. He is loving whether we believe He is loving or not. He is loving whether He creates anything or not. He is loving whether He can express His love to an unloving people or not. God is Love!
The Mercy of God might be thought of as a relative attribute, only in the sense that we can only comprehend that attribute of God in the experiential realm as He has the opportunity to be merciful to His own.
Definition of Mercy - The Mercy of God is the essential characteristics of God whereby He relieves the miseries of His creatures.
Have you ever had the miseries? You can't put itching powder on it to relieve the pressure. The Lord is the Specialist.
