The Capped Crusader
In 1966 there was a new T.V. Series that hit the market, it was called "Batman" which became an instant hit, though the series eventually ended, only to come back in various formats, until making major debuts on the big screen, where there have been numerous movies about the man that drives a bat-mobile, lives in a bat-cave, and wears a mask with bat-ears.
Growing up in the 60's most all of us boys were huge superhero fans, and it was normal for us to go into the towel cabinet and pull out a supersized towel, tying it around our necks, so that we could fight those bad guys. Once you put that towel around your neck, covering your back, you became invincible. Oddly enough, even Superman wore a cape, so we could just as easily mimic him, as we strived to become "Superheroes."
In John 13, we also find a superhero donning a cape, but he did not wear his own his back, he wrapped it around his waist. The Lord placed his cape around his waist and rather than flying high with his cape, it made him stoop low, as we watch him bending down and washing the feet of twelve men and drying them off with his towel.
In this chapter, we find the Lord teaching his twelve disciples about soaring high, since they had previously been arguing about which one might be the greatest and as to who would sit on the left and right of his throne. He takes that towel, wraps it around his waist, and stoops down. The lesson was simple, if you want to climb higher, stoop lower.
If we want to wear the cape of a superhero, all we need to do is get a towel!!!
