Title: Are You Ready For God
Author: Jerry Watts
Text: Isaiah 6
Please turn to Isaiah 6. Question, "Are you ready for God?" Yes, no, maybe so.
Most of the older adults in this room grew up starting their school day with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed by what we term, "The Lord's Prayer." Today, this is believed to be wrong or bad by many. I'm kind of amazed that you turned out as good as you did. We not only used that prayer to start the day, but to start many things.
I would argue that the prayer which Jesus gave in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 is not really the Lord's Prayer (John 17) but rather, is His Model prayer. Luke 11 begins with Jesus praying and it seems the disciples heard Him praying and they said, "Lord, teach us to pray." So Jesus followed with this prayer. What I want you to see is the consistent teaching in the Bible about How to be ready for God. Let me illustrate.
He begins, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed (holy) be you name, your kingdom come, your will be done." In other words, we are told to "LOOK UPWARD" first. This gives a proper perspective. Then He says, "your will be done, on earth like it is in heaven." Now, He is calling us to "LOOK OUTWARD " and see the world thru the eyes of the Father. Why? Because Jesus knew and we should know that the Fathers knows what's best and wants what's best for His crown creation (you, me, and the world) "Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive our sin, only as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us the evil (or the evil one)." Finally, He's telling His listeners and us to LOOK INWARD." He ended the prayer where He began - Looking Upward.
While looking outward and inward is frequently reversed, the call to look upward is always best. This next week, in your devotions preparing us for the REVIVAL MEETING, you will meditate on this prayer and rediscover the personal connection from it.
