King Edward VIII Announces His Abdication

I had never really heard of the story of King Edward VIII until I began to prepare this sermon, but his story was one of the greatest acts of love, as he was willing to walk away from the British Throne, due to his overwhelming love for an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

King Edward VIII was having an affair with Wallis Simpson, but her husband granted her papers of divorcement, so the king and the commoner were in love. The news of this romance was well known, though the BBC and the British Government, hid the news from the United Kingdom citizens.

As the powers to be pressed King Edward VIII to end the affair and prohibited any thoughts of marriage to this woman that was now twice divorced, the king refused to end the relationship. He rather chose to take the matter before the people by radio broadcast, which was quickly shot down.

King Edward only saw one outlet, which was to abdicate the throne and walk away from his position as the King of England, though he had only been king for less than a year. On December 10th, 1936 the king signed his letter of abdication and the next day he would do his radio broadcast.

Edward married Wallis on June 3rd, 1937 and they remained married until he died in 1972, they had no children, while living in Bahamas, Paris, and abroad for the rest of their life.
