Introduction

1. In every war there are always heroes. Perhaps the greatest war ever fought, World War II, there was no shortage of heroes. Easily the heroes come from the winning side, but most everyone agrees that perhaps the most unexpected hero of all was in fact a Nazis, but he was a lousy Nazis. He was a womanizer, unfaithful to his wife over and over and was a heavy drinker. He was a crooked scheming businessman that nobody trusted. He did something so heroic that a movie was made about it. You may have seen it. It was called Schindler's List. This most unlikely hero saved the lives of 1200 Jews and his name is still revered in Israel to this day.

2. Now this man was a unlikely hero because of his character, but there is another unlikely hero in the Bible, who God made a hero because of his character. His name was Joseph. We have been in a Christmas series we have been calling "Unsung Hero" and by all accounts you have to say that Joseph may be the most unlikely hero in the Bible. Think about it. Imagine God came to you and said, "I am going to send my son to become a human being who will be born of a virgin, but he will be fully human. I've already picked out the mother, but I'm going to let you pick out the father." Who would you choose? This is the man that is going to be given the responsibility of raising the Son of God. He is going to be the one that Jesus will call "Dad." He is the one responsible for taking care of him, making sure all of his needs are met and making sure he makes it to manhood so he can accomplish his mission. Who would you choose?
