Author: Collin Wimberly
Philemon 17-25
INTRODUCTION:
Friendship is one of the greatest blessings in life - it can also be one of the greatest heartaches. We have all know the pain of being disappointed by a friend. Many of us have been betrayed by someone we felt close to.
On the other hand, we also know the joy of having close friends in Christ.
In these verses Paul gives us some clues, some keys to Christ-centered relationships.
I) VALUE THE FRIENDSHIPS GOD GIVES YOU -
In this letter we find Paul valuing and being committed to two very different friendships. Paul was faithful to his friends.
A) PHILEMON - If you count me as a partner. The word partner carries the idea of participation, they had worked together for the Gospel. They shared something in common. The fellowship they experienced was more than skin deep. They had fellowship together in Christ.
1) There was Equality - Paul the great Apostle to the Gentile, miracle worker and epistle writer could have ordered Philemon to do what he wanted. But he treated him as an equal. There is unity and equality in the Body of Christ. ILLUS: Pastor in DC, welcoming a prostitute into church membership, that had been saved. Here she was surrounded by wealthy, powerful people, government officals, she had nothing, but as people greeted here and welcomed her into the church the pastor remarked, the ground is wonderfully level at the foot of the cross!
2) There was Necessity - He was a partner, someone needed. We need others. "Other believers are necessary for our well-being."
We need each other for encouragement -
We need each other for ministry -
Look around you, the people that are here are people that you need. God has placed them here at this moment in your life for a reason. You are incomplete without them! You might be able to survive without others, but you cannot thrive without others. ...
