CIT - Paul expresses his appreciation and admiration of Philemon.
Proposition - Christians today should live the kind of outstanding life that Philemon lead.
INTRODUCTION:
I thank my God is the main clause of this introduction.
A word of thanksgiving was common in the opening sections of Paul's letters.
He also prayed for them with a spirit of thanksgiving.
a) When he gave thanks - always , whenever he prayed for Philemon, he was grateful to God for his ministry and knowing him.
b) To whom he gave thanks - to God - all good things, especially the treasured relationships that we have are from the Father above.
c) For whom - Philemon - This tells us something of Paul's prayer life - He prayed specifically and personally for people.
What was it about Philemon's life that was so outstanding that Paul had to say, I thank my God, every time I pray for you?
I) THE REALITY OF HIS PROFESSION - VS. 5
Hearing of your - In the present tense, he continues to hear a good report. From who? It could have been Epapharas mentioned in vs. 23. He founded the church at Colossae (Col. 4:12). Other church members or ministers that Philemon had touched.
It could well have been Onesimus. His heart had been changed, and perhaps he realized how good of a master he actually had.
Vs. 5 is called a chiasm in the Greek language. Love relates to the final phrase "toward all the saints", and faith relates to "the Lord Jesus Christ."
We find this same idea in Col. 1:4
Colossians 1:4 (ESV)
4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 1
A) HE HAD A GENUINE FAITH IN CHRIST - He was trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior. His salvation was not built on his own good works, or his own abilities, but in the Lord Jesus Christ.
