Title: Wonderful Counselor (1 of 4)
Series: He Shall Be Called
Author: Jim Perdue
Text: Isaiah 9:6-7
This morning, we are starting a brand new Christmas series. It's a series named; He Shall Be Called. There's a phrase in Isaiah 9 that tells us some titles of the Messiah in a prophecy written 700 years before the birth of Christ.
Before we can look at the meaning of our text, we need to briefly look at the context in which these words are written. The book of Isaiah is one of the most significant books of prophecy and one of the most important books in the Bible. It is regularly quoted throughout the New Testament and also speaks of the coming Messiah and what he will do.
This prophecy that talks about a future for Israel that is dark but will be lifted. It's a restoration to a bright future. Isaiah prophesied that this will come about by a child that God will send who will become king. But this isn't any ordinary man; rather he will be called Mighty God and Prince of Peace. And his rule will never end.1
Over the next several weeks, we are going to look at these four titles given to us in this text: "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." If His name is "Wonderful," then there will be nothing dull about His reign! As "Counselor," He has the wisdom to rule justly; and as the "Mighty God," He has the power to execute His wise plans. "Everlasting Father" does not suggest that the Son is also the Father, for each Person in the Godhead is distinct. "Father of Eternity" is a better translation. Among the Jews, the word "father" means "originator" or "source." For example, Satan is the "father [originator] of lies" (John 8:44). If you want anything eternal, you must get it from Jesus Christ; He is the "Father of eternity."2
"Wonder Counselor" describes a king that is wise. This would cause most Israelites to think of King Solomon, the wisest person to ever live. But this king is far wiser than even Solomon, and he wil ...
