The frustrated Christian life occurs when we try to live for God instead of allowing Christ to live through us. If you try to live for God, you will fail. You might have limited success toward religion, but you will not discover the depth of what God has designed for you. Let's begin by looking at Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
You aren't supposed to live for God, but allow God to crucify your life of the flesh. If you go back and read the passages that precede verse 20, the Apostle Paul is explaining that the law put him under condemnation. He lived as perfect as he possibly could, but when he discovered Christ, his self-righteousness and religious works became trash in Paul's eyes.
The flesh cannot produce righteousness. Righteousness is a gift of the Spirit, and the life of righteousness is the life of the Spirit flowing through us. It is a life of faith, not of works. Faith does its work, but works cannot produce faith or the work of the Spirit.
The weaknesses of the flesh are nullified in the life of the Spirit. Most people try to live the Christian life by attempting to break the strongholds of the flesh by human effort. We tend to think, If I can get this sin out of my life, I'll be right with God.
Not so. It is the Spirit who gives life, and the Spirit that drives out the flesh. It is not we who make room for the Spirit, but the Spirit that drives out anything that hinders the life of the Spirit when we yield ourselves to Him. Look at 2 Corinthians 10:4
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.
