Why are there so many hypocrites in the church?

I invited someone to church a while back, [true story] ...and when I did, they looked me in the eyes and said... There's no way! I said, "Well, why not?" ...and their reply? "There are far too many hypocrites in that church."

May I tell you something today? There are far too many hypocrites in EVERY church... and that fact goes back thousands and thousands of years.

In fact, in the Bible, you rarely see Jesus get fired up or upset. There are only a couple times in Scripture where he gets really worked up... but there's one time in particular, I can tell you that his blood pressure was up and the veins were popping out of this neck... and that's when he was addressing religious hypocrisy in the church.

In [Matthew 23], Jesus delivered a message to the crowd and to his disciples, denouncing the biggest religious hypocrites of his day... They were known as the Pharisees... and in this message, I counted seven times where Jesus said to them...
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" (v. 13, 14, 15, 23, 25, 27, 29)

What was it about these hypocrites that set Jesus off? Well, he gives us 2 reasons at the beginning of this chapter:
[v. 3] "They don't practice what they teach."
[v. 5] "They do everything to be seen by others."

Jesus said... these Pharisaical hypocrites talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk. They were publicly pretending to be something for personal gain... and Jesus knew that their public persona didn't match their private reality.

I think that's a pretty good definition for 'hypocrisy.' Hypocrisy is when our public persona doesn't match our private reality. And the unfortunate thing is... when the lost world around us, looks within our churches... and they see someone that matches that description, it damages the church, but not only d ...
