Canaan is not a picture of heaven. This book is not a picture of what God wants to do in your life one day in heaven. Rather, Canaan a picture of what God wants to do for you today on earth. Canaan is a picture of victory.

And tonight, we will see that one key to walking in victory is living a life with death and judgment in mind. Tonight, as this book study draws to a close, we are going to the funeral of 3 men.

And as the Holy Spirit writes their eulogy and prints their obituary, we gain insight into how to live a life of victory. Tonight's simple lesson prepares us for the day when God writes the obituary.

In my lifetime, there has been a cultural trend away from going to funerals. And I think we are "worse off" for not going to funerals.

Christian funerals are a matter of duty. As we honor the deceased and comfort the survivors, both Biblical commands.

Christian funerals are also a matter of doxology. As we praise God with a worship is born out of a renewed awareness, that Christ, our conquering King, has defeated death.

But Christian funerals are also a matter of doctrine. Funerals bring us to a place of wonderful irony. We hear the sound of tears, yet we hear of a place where tears will be gone.

We feel the anguish of soul. Yet we are reminded that there is coming a day when anguish itself will be banished.

With a casket, a funeral spray, and songs about heaven, there is reason to gloriously anticipate the day when our bodies will rise from the grave, saying, "Death where is your victory? Grave where is your sting?" And along with Paul we say, "Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
