Title: The Blessings of Traveling Down Memory Lane (27 of 29)
Series: Walking in Victory-Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living from the Book of Joshua
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Joshua 24:1-13
Canaan is not a picture of heaven. This book is not a picture of what God wants to do in your life one day in heaven. Rather, Canaan a picture of what God wants to do for you today on earth. Canaan is a picture of victory.
And tonight, we are going to see that one of the keys to victory is a good memory. But don't get nervous. I don't mean you have to remember names, dates, and phone numbers.
I heard about a man who forgot his wife's wedding anniversary. She was so mad she said, "The only way to make up for it, there'd better be a very special gift in the carport tomorrow. One that will go from 0 to 200 in less than 8 seconds." The next day she got up and he had bought her a new set of bathroom scales.
Tonight, I really am talking about the necessity of having a good spiritual memory...the God-given ability to remember the good things God has done for you.
Psalm 103:2 - Bless the Lord O my soul and forget not His benefits.
After the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, the country seemed to adopt a new national motto of sorts, "Never forget." In fact, when the administration came under criticism for its handling of the war on terror, a popular country song asked, "Have you forgotten?"
The implication is, "You wouldn't be making the decisions you're making if you had a better memory." In a war of another era, the cry was "Remember the Alamo."
Years earlier in Israel's history, Moses was nearing his death. And he wrote a song and sang it over the people.
Deuteronomy 32:7 - Remember the days of old, consider the years of all generations, Ask your father and he will inform you, your elders and they will tell you.
People who forget about the past are destined to repeat it.
This was just a reminder of what Moses had told them earlier in Deuteron ...
