Canaan is not a picture of heaven. This is not a picture or a symbolic representation of what God wants to do in your life one day in heaven. This story is a picture of what God wants to do IN you, WITH you, and FOR you right now. Rather, Canaan is a picture of victory. And you will never walk in victory in this life if you don't learn how to resolve conflict.
In my pre-marriage counseling, I deal with three basic things: Money management, marital intimacy, and conflict resolution. Every relation is going to have conflict. The only question is how the conflict will be resolved, if it is resolved at all.
The story in this chapter has several key aspects. In fact, there is a tremendous series of messages here. I intend to preach at least one more message from this chapter.
There is a story here about the danger of complacency. The 2.5 tribes we read about are more than willing to settle in, settle down, and settle for less than God's best. Don't listen to this message tonight and think they are the heroes. They're not.
There is also a story here about the danger of compromise. The transjordanian tribes are not guilty of the idolatrous motive they are accused of, but neither are they totally innocent of the insidious sin of compromise. They are willing to live just close enough to be considered the people of God but far enough away to not be constrained by its boundaries.
But tonight, I want us to consider the danger of conflict. When the chapter begins, all is well. But something happens that takes the nation of Israel to the brink of civil war.
It all involves an altar. It involves an issue of worship. It involves a religious issue between brothers and sisters.
