I love to listen to Dr. J. Vernon McGee. His unique voice is symbolic of his unique approach to teaching "thru the Bible." But one reason I love to listen to the late Dr. McGee's radio program is because of the theme music the show uses.
When I listen to "Thru the Bible" I am regularly reminded of a great hymn of the faith that says,
How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word
What more can He say than to you he hath said
To you, who for refuge, to Jesus hath fled
If I asked for an "amen," everyone would affirm the word of God. We would almost all agree that it will not falter or fail. But I want to show you 4 "Practical Realities about God's Unfailing Word."
To do that, let me remind you of what is happening here. All the tribes had their individual land allotments. We read that in chapters 15-19. In chapter 20, we read about the 6 cities of refuge. And now, we come to the individual CITIES given to the Levites.
1. The picture of permeation
We learned earlier in the Old Testament that the Levites would not have a specific land allotment in Canaan. The plan of God was that they be dispersed throughout the Promised Land.
Deuteronomy 18:1-2 - "The priests, the Levites-all the tribe of Levi-shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and His portion. Therefore, they shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the Lord is their inheritance, as He said to them."
There are at least three reasons I believe God did not give a particular land allotment to the Levites.
The first reason was proximity. God wanted the Israelites to have priests nearby, ready, and accessible. With there was only one tabernacle and later a temple, synagogues would dot the landscape. Plac ...
