Title: Give Me This Mountain (17 of 29)
Series: Walking in Victory-Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living from the Book of Joshua
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Joshua 14
I will remind you tonight that Canaan is not a picture of heaven. In the book of Joshua, we see clear evidence Canaan is a picture of victorious and triumphant living.
For the people of God, Canaan was more than a place. It was a promise and it was a picture. It was a promise for God's people in that day. It is a picture for God's people in this day.
It meant release. They'd been slaves in Egypt. Don't you want to be free from the bondage of sin?
It meant rest. They'd been wandering and warring. Aren't you tired from the battles of this life?
It meant refreshment. They'd been on a desert diet. Now they are in the land of milk and honey. God has more in store for you than for you to eat the junk food of this world's system.
It meant reality. Up until now they'd only heard sermons about Canaan from Joshua and Caleb. But now they are living there. For you, I want this victorious Christian life to be more than something you hear about on Sundays, maybe assuming the life of victory is just for the pastor, deacons, and super saints.
First of all, the pastor and deacons are not super saints. Second, God has a plan for your life that is just as REAL as His plan for my life.
And chapter 14 is in so many ways a continuation of the 13th chapter. Last week we did a character study of Joshua, Moses, and Balaam as we reminded ourselves that to walk in victory you must remember, "God's Not Finished with You." No one is ever so old, so fallen, or so backslidden that God is finished with them.
Tonight's lesson is in some ways, "part 2" of that lesson. Many preachers treat chapters 13-14 as a single unit. Last week, the text had particular application for our senior adults. Two people said, "You stepped on my toes." I was actually aiming for your heart!
