Title: When the End Comes (15 of 29)
Series: Walking in Victory-Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living from the Book of Joshua
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Joshua 12
I had considered departing from our study in Joshua because of Graduate Recognition night. But as I poured over this chapter, I find there is much to be said here to high school seniors. In fact, there's much to be said in this chapter to senior adults.
If I were preparing a GRAD NIGHT sermon, I would have never thought to turn to a story about the conquest of Canaanite kings. But now, I honestly don't know if there could be a better passage to speak to these seniors, their families, and to each one of us.
Someone has said, "Live life in such a way so that when you are old you will be able to look back and enjoy it a second time."
Someone else has noted that, "Hindsight is 20-20." That is, anyone can see the right way to go AFTER the fact.
ANYONE can win the lottery after the winning numbers are drawn. Well, not anyone, because I'm not buying them even then. ANYONE can make the right decision if they could see the end from the beginning.
As Israel comes to the end of the fighting, the inspired writer lets us look back on some things. Tonight we will see the good, the bad, and the ugly.
That is, as we look through the lens of experience, we see some positive and negative lessons about life, death, and following God...Things you'll want to keep in mind...to be prepared for the day when the end comes.
1. The promises of God will be realized
One of the nicknames of Canaan is the "Promised Land." Some people mistakenly pronounce it as the "Promise Land." Hebrews 11:9 calls it a "Land of Promise"
But Canaan is not merely a land that is FILLED with promises. It is a land that is the FULFILLMENT of a promise.
In other words, there aren't just promises when you get there. Getting there is a promise in and of itself.
A. This promise was prophetically fulfilled
