I will remind you tonight that Canaan is not a picture of heaven. In the book of Joshua, we see clear evidence Canaan is a picture of victorious and triumphant living. Joshua is a great playbook and at the same time, a sober reminder, especially for those of us who tend to sing, "Victory in Jesus" while actually living in defeat.
Although the Holy Spirit seems to edit this drama for time and for content, reader discretion is still advised. There is no question that a movie made from the actual video footage of this chapter would be rater R for extreme violence...and yet there is a lesson here for us.
The text is a little longer than we are accustomed to reading but I challenge you to stay mentally and spiritually engaged as we read it.
Tonight's lengthy story is more of a horror story, filled with violence, bloodshed and carnage. If it were a movie, we would expect to see Arnold Schwarzeneggar or Sylvester Stallone playing Joshua.
But make no mistake. That's not the Terminator or Rambo out in front of the people of God. It's brother Joshua, God's appointed man, led by the Spirit of God, with Canaanite blood on his boots and the hair of dead Amorites wrapped around the handle of his sword.
For the soft-spoken, weak-kneed believers in God's army, this passage reminds us that walking in victory not a cakewalk. Rather it is a calling to take up the sword of the spirit and do bloody battle with the enemy.
Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war with the cross of Jesus going on before...And in this chapter, we see that moving and marching in victory means that we TAKE NO PRISONERS.
