Title: Making Peace with the Devil (11 of 29)
Series: Walking in Victory-Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living from the Book of Joshua
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Joshua 9
As we move through this series, we must remind ourselves each week that the Land of Canaan is not a picture of a heaven. Poorly-written gospel songs and badly-delivered funeral sermons give the impression that Canaan is a distant promise for the ol' by and by. The fact is, it is a distinct possibility for the now and now.
The Land of Canaan is a picture of victory. It's a place God wants His people to inhabit and occupy NOW.
But too many believers don't realize there's no victory without a fight. Too many fail to see there's no trophy without an opponent and there's no crown without a cross.
Possessing the promise land and walking in victory requires FAITH but it also requires FIGHTING. This is important because if you don't know you've got an enemy, you will lose every time. If you don't show up for the game, you will lose every time. If you don't realize you're in a fight, you will lose every time.
It seems as if the nation of Israel, particularly her leaders, momentarily forgot they had an adversary. And in a moment of weakness, they entered into a treaty with the enemy.
And I want you to catch this big idea from the very beginning. When you make a peace treaty with the enemy, you will always do it on the enemy's terms. And you will never have real peace when you make peace with the Devil.
There are three things I want you to notice about this ill-advised treaty and it pictures compromising decisions we can so frequently make in our own lives.
1. The Typical Atmosphere of this Treaty (1-14)
By "typical" I actually mean this story can serve as a type or template of the foolish decisions we can make. And we will usually make them when the circumstances and atmosphere around those decisions lend themselves to our being duped and deceived by the Devil.
