Text: John 15:1-5
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Here we are sitting in this building on January 7, 2024. We are gathered to worship, to sing, to celebrate, to confess and repent, to listen, and to learn how to follow Jesus.
We do this because Jesus is the central figure of our faith. God the Father and God the Holy Spirit have made Jesus central. It is how God has designed to draw us into a relationship with Himself.
This is the most important relationship we have. I have spent my entire life (at least since I was 15) trying to learn how to relate to Jesus. I've read tons of books, been to countless seminars and conferences, and listened to the best speakers on the subject.
And there always seems to be this tension between knowing about Jesus, from an intellectual side and knowing Jesus from a relational side.
Do we get to know Jesus in the classroom or do we get to know Jesus as we live out our daily lives, experiencing circumstances and serving others?
The answer is that knowing Jesus carries both an intellectual side and a relational side. I think they both feed each other. It's not much different than getting to know another person. In getting to know another person you will sit down with them, ask them questions about themselves, find out about their family, what they love, what they hate, their passions in life.
