We've noted in past lessons in this series that Canaan is not a picture of heaven. Bad sermons and inaccurate gospel songs have given heaven the nickname of "Canaan Land." Some are in our own hymnal.

Rather, Canaan is a picture of victory. Even though Canaan was a promised land it was also a possessed land. Yes, there were advantages there but there were also adversaries there. And before it could be occupied it had to be overthrown.

This distinction is vitally important. If you view heaven as the place of victory, you will walk in defeat in this life waiting for the life to come.

When you got saved, all the blessings of God became yours. All the promises of God became yours. But we still have an adversary, 3 of them in fact. Every day, God's people battle with the world, the flesh, and the devil.

The battle of Jericho is the first military battle Israel faces as they begin to claim what is rightfully theirs. In this conquest we see some important spiritual truths to give us victory in the battles we face.

Many of you have heard the story of the pastor who was filling in for the 7th grade boys' SS class. He asked them if they knew who knocked over the walls of Jericho. When they said they didn't know anything about it, the pastor was troubled. A deacon said, "If those boys said they didn't do it, I believe them."

The reality is, a lot of people don't know what happened at Jericho.
