Title: You Have to Grow Up If You Want To Go In (3 of 29)
Series: Walking in Victory- Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Joshua 1:10-18
As we continue this new series through Joshua, I want to remind you about the spiritual symbolism of this book. The promise land, or Canaan, is not a picture of heaven. God wants His people to live in spiritual Canaan right NOW. Not later...NOW.
Canaan is a picture of victory. It is symbolic and typical of the victorious Christian life. It is a picture of the maturity and victory God wants for each of His people.
That distinction is very important to see as we look at these 9 verses. Because everyone wants to walk in victory in every area of life. But not everyone is willing to pay the price.
For example, if I were to ask, how many of you want to be in better shape physically? To have stronger muscles, more endurance and greater health? Everyone would raise their hand. If I said, "Meet me at the gym at 4:30am, there would be fewer people who were interested, including tonight's preacher.
What may be humorous in the physical realm is all too tragic in the spiritual realm. We SAY we want spiritual growth and maturity...We SAY we want to walk in victory...but far too often we aren't willing to put in the time and effort that precedes spiritual growth and victorious Christian living.
In tonight's text we see 3 keys to moving on in maturity with God. These verses teach us simply that if you want to live in victory you have to prepare like a champion and fight like a warrior.
Many believers I know would live like a warrior if they could get warrior output on pew potato input. These verses teach us that won't happen. You have to grow up if you want to go in.
In our first 2 lessons we find Moses has died, Joshua has been installed as the leader of Israel, and the people God are commanded to cross the Jordan River into the promise land.
