Title: Living Life With a Limp
Author: Ernest Easley
Text: Genesis 32
As you take God's word and are turning to Genesis 32, let me ask you this: do you know anyone who walks with a limp? When I think of limpers, my mind races back to the old western on TV called Gunsmoke. There was a character on the show named Chester who walked with a noticeable limp caused by a stiff right leg.
The actor who played Chester was Dennis Weaver, who added this limp to the character before he even auditioned. After getting the role, he had to train himself to walk with a limp, climb stairs with a limp, ride horses with a limp, do everything with a limp.
In real life, Weaver was an excellent athlete, yet he pulled off the limp so well that scores of fans wrote letters asking if his limp was real. The truth is, Chester the character walked with a limp but Dennis Weaver the actor walked with no limp. It was just an act. But for many people, walking with a limp is no act, it's a real part of their life.
I have some great news for all you with a limp: just as it landed Weaver a job on the TV show Gunsmoke, it could help you land a job too! I recently read an article by Dave Anderson with the Anderson Leadership Solutions in his post "Leadership My Dad's Way, Management" wrote: 'Hire people who walk with a limp. Adversity builds character. I find that the people I admire have not always had things easy. Somewhere, at some time in their past these people overcame circumstances in their lives that changed them. They walk with a limp."
He goes on to say, "Through my 15 years of interviewing, hiring and training people, I discovered that finding people who walk with a limp is often an indicator of their character. Find people who walk with a limp. These people were wounded once in life or in business but adapted and grew as a result."
In this thirty-second chapter of Genesis, we read about a man named Jacob whom Anderson would have hired on the spot. He was a l ...
