Jer 8:20 KJV - The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

Jer 8:21 KJV - For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.

Jer 8:22 KJV - [Is there] no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

I will never forget going to eat with one of our friends one Sunday after church. We were close friends, as we went to church together, attended Sunday school together, our kids played together, and they had invited us over to eat. The house was a bit odd, being a two-story house, with no front or back porch, which was a bit out there in itself, but the kicker was that the house, namely the kitchen had no cabinets, I mean none, zilch, it was literally absent.

It gets better, the former owner and the one that built this house was a cabinet maker, so in building his own house, he put zero cabinets inside. I am not sure if he intended on placing cabinets inside the house and just never got around to it, or maybe he hated cabinets and refused to place them inside his own house, the one that he built.

This can be likened unto the 20 out of 28 states in India that prohibit the slaughtering of cows, due to religious beliefs. One could literally be starving and watch a cow walk by, with no thought of ever eating it.

You may ask, "What do these examples have to do with the story before us?" I am so glad that you asked, because Gilead had some sort of healing balm for those that were sick, yet Jeremiah said they acted as if they were clueless to the solution for their issues.
