Tonight, we begin a wonderful journey of faith and progress through the Old Testament book of Joshua. It's the story of Israel's occupation of Canaan, the promised land. But it also serves as a type or a symbol of the victory we have as Spirit-filled believers. So I've labeled the series, "Walking in Victory, Lessons in Triumphant Christian Living from the Book of Joshua."

And I want to introduce this series by sharing some information that I intend to share at the beginning of each lesson through Joshua. Understanding that repetition is a great teacher, pay close attention to this simple lesson about the land of Canaan.

The Land of Canaan is not a picture of a heaven. Poorly-written gospel songs and badly-delivered funeral sermons give the impression that Canaan is a distant promise for the ol' by and by. The fact is, it is a distinct possibility for the now and now.

One of the first songs I remember singing in church was "Canaan Land is Just in Sight." The lyrics said, "There will be no sorrow there in that tomorrow. We will be there by and by. Milk and honey flowing. That is where I'm going. Canaan Land is just in sight."

I'm not the guy who picks songs apart. I've sung that song before and may sing it again. It's not wrong about heaven. It's just not accurate in the sense that Canaan is not a picture of heaven.

Rather, the Land of Canaan and Israel's occupation of it is a picture of victory. It's a place God wants His people to inhabit and occupy NOW.

Another old gospel song puts it a bit more accurately, declaring, "Egypt was once my home I was a slave. Helpless in sin did roam, love's light did crave. But when I looked up to heaven's throne, Christ came to save. I'm living in Canaan now!"
