Title: No Place to Stay
Author: Marvin Patterson
Text: Luke 2:1-21
Introduction:
There was a period of time in England when Christians were not able to practice their faith openly so they had to find other ways to pass on their beliefs. The song The Twelve Days of Christmas is one example of how they did it. The song goes:
- ''On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me...'' The ''true love'' represents God and ''me'' represents those who are Christians and have received God's gifts.
- ''Partridge in a pear tree'' represented Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God.
- ''Two turtle doves'' were the Old and New Testaments, another gift from God.
- ''Three French hens'' represented faith, hope, and love.
- ''Four calling birds'' spoke of the 4 Gospels that tell the story of salvation.
- ''Five golden rings'' spoke of the first 5 books of the Bible.
- ''Six geese a laying'' spoke of the days of creation.
- ''Seven swans a swimming'' spoke of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- ''Eight maids a milking'' spoke of the 8 beatitudes.
- ''Nine ladies dancing'' spoke of the 9 fruits of the Spirit.
- ''Ten lords a leaping'' spoke of the 10 Commandments.
- ''Eleven pipers piping'' spoke of the eleven faithful disciples.
- ''Twelve drummers drumming'' spoke of the 12 Apostles.i

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
This gives us an idea as to the time of the taxation. It was when Caesar Augustus was ruling the whole world in Rome! He ruled the world for forty-one years with an iron fist and he had to bring everyone to their home city to be taxed so he could keep up with the number of people that was in his empire, and so that he could gain tax money to supple and enlarge his great fighting machine, the Roman Army!
